All foreign nationals need a valid passport and valid Indian visa to enter and exit India for any purpose.  This is required to carry your valid passport and VISA at all times while enjoying a vacation in India. In case your passport is stolen or lost notify your country's embassy or consulate.  

All foreign nationals coming to India are required to have a valid international travel document in the form of a national passport with a valid visa obtained from an Indian Mission or Post abroad.

India government now allowed visa on arrival for citizens from 43 countries, who can make an entry at any one of the designated 9 international airports in India.

Citizens of the following countries holding ordinary passports are granted visa on arrival for a single stay up to 30 days in India when travelling as tourist or visiting family or friends, short duration medical treatment : Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Cook Islands, Djibouti, Fiji, Finland, Germany, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Kiribati, Laos, Luxembourg, Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Mexico, Micronesia, Myanmar, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue Island, Norway, Oman, Palau, Palestine, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Russia, Samoa, Singapore, Solomon Islands,Thailand, Tonga, Tuvalu, UAE, Ukraine, USA, Vanuatu, Vietnam.

The nine International airports where in facility has been approved are:  Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Goa

Ministry of Tourism in India has launched a dedicated website for allocating visa on arrival via this website.

Other countries which are yet to get this E-VISA facility to visit India , required to apply for the Indian Visa to Indian Mission at their own country well in advance.
